The Commissioner General of the Gambia Revenue Authority (GRA), Yankuba Darboe, has said the new Integrated Tax Administration System (ITAS) will modernise domestic tax administration by replacing manual processes with a digital platform designed to improve efficiency, transparency and compliance.
He made the remarks on Wednesday during a sensitisation workshop for manufacturers held as part of ongoing stakeholder engagement ahead of the rollout of the system.
Darboe described ITAS as a key component of the authority’s modernisation agenda, noting that it will enable taxpayers to register businesses, file returns, make payments and access tax services online without visiting GRA offices.
“ITAS will revolutionise the entire domestic tax revenue administration in The Gambia,” Darboe said. “The current system is largely manual, and we need to move away from it.”
He said the new platform is part of broader efforts to digitalise tax administration and align revenue collection with international best practices.
According to him, taxpayers currently spend considerable time moving between offices to complete tax-related processes, a challenge the new system is expected to address.
“When ITAS is deployed, taxpayers will be able to carry out their obligations online from their offices or homes,” he said.
Darboe urged manufacturers to participate actively in the training sessions and familiarise themselves with the system, describing them as important partners in national development.
He added that stakeholders were involved in the development process to ensure the platform is user-friendly and meets business needs.
The Commissioner General also called on participants to share knowledge gained from the workshop with other taxpayers who were not present.
He stressed the importance of tax compliance, noting that tax revenue remains essential for financing infrastructure, public services and national development programmes.
Earlier, ITAS Project Manager Samba Sallah said the sensitisation workshop aimed to engage taxpayers and gather feedback ahead of implementation. He said the system would simplify compliance, reduce costs and improve service delivery for businesses.
The GRA is expected to roll out the ITAS platform as part of its wider digital transformation agenda.
