Corruption kills development spirit of any country – Hon Sanyang

Honorable Yaya Sanyang, a member of the National Assembly representing Latri Kunda Sabiji has said corruption always killed the development spirit of any country if the people fail to fight against it.

In an interview with this medium, he said this government doesn’t have the wisdom to deal with the current problems in this country concerning the high cost of living, high rate of unemployment among the youths, lack of security, and rampant corruption among other burning issues.

Therefore, “I am not hopeful that this country can move forward or progress under Barrow’s administration because there is no political will and commitment by his government to deal with corruption.”

He said the outcome of this local government election is a clear testimony that the end of Barrow’s administration is nearer and “a vote of no confidence collectively by Gambians have been placed on NPP led government.”

He argued that the past LG election also shows that Gambians are fed up with the NPP government and “the citizens are eager for a replacement in the upcoming Presidential elections in 2026.”

He advised citizens to go to court if they feel their rights are seized by the government. “The courts are there for everyone and everyone is a subject of the law including the president. Civil society organizations should also be very active in rights sensitization while access to justice should also be promoted.”

However, he said his message to the government is clear “Gambians don’t have any trust and confidence in their way of governance because people have been suffering for the past four to five years with the high rate of crimes every day, poverty and others especially those living in the urban areas, rents are extremely high and unaffordable for the poor Gambians.”

He called on the government to regulate rent issues in the country by making it affordable to the people while landlords and dealers should not operate outside the law.

All these burning issues, he said, should be addressed by the government as soon as possible to restore the trust people are losing in the government.
