GDC will secure more seats in parliament in 2022 – Ndow

Dodou Ndow, diaspora public relations officer for Opposition Gambia Democratic Congress party has said his party will secure more seats in the National Assembly in the upcoming parliamentary elections due in April 2022.

Speaking to The Voice, he said: “The Gambians are getting more mature in politics, they are making decisions in politics and that is an advantage to the opposition. In many African countries, they give power to the president and give parliament to the opposition or use mayoral and mix it depending on the area.”

“Gambians are developing more in politics so much I don’t think they will take everything and give it to one person. They will give more power to the opposition than the government so that there can be a separation of powers,” he added.

He further explained that giving power to the oppositions in parliament is the reason why so many laws get in that will protect them and make them have checks and balances that they are supposed to have.

“If you give all the power to the president, the country will always work in the favor of the president so in that case we will shift towards what he wants, not him shifting to what people want. If you have the National Assembly and bring them down, give power to the opposition they will be critical of the government they are the watchdog for the people and with the help of the media and civil societies, they will hold the executives into account.

“What the Gambia needs right now is peace wherever people get peace is what they value after peace they need development, and we don’t expect that development to happen overnight but in next five to ten years Gambia can be compared to South Africa, or even Senegal. We can do it because we are two million people, we have people and educated so let’s put right people in the right places so we could achieve,” he added.
