Accused Person Regrets Action

Lamin Janneh on Thursday appeared before the Kanifing Magistrate Court presided over by Magistrate Doun Njie for causing bodily harm, offence contrary to Laws of The Gambia, an act he regretted.

In his particular of offence, Lamin Janneh on or about the 14th day of May 2021 at Bakau , in Kanifing Municipality of The Republic of The Gambia, he (Lamin) wilfully assaulted  Sarjo Bojang by stabbing him with a knife and broken bottle of soft drink on his buttock and chest.

The accused, Lamin Janneh, pleaded guilty of the offence after the statement of the offence was read to him.

According to the police prosecution, on the said day in Bakau Janneh Kunda around 3pm, a man called Musa Sonko gave a mobile phone to him to sell, after selling the phone Musa got the information that the phone was already sold, he demanded for the money from him (Lamin). Instead of giving the money, he said the accused person told him (Musa) to leave and that he will bring the money.

He continued, while the accused person was in Newtown, three people namely Musa Demba, Sarjo Bojang and Kanet saw the accused in Newton and asked for money.

Meanwhile they were arrested and took to Bakau Police Station where they gave their statements, while the accused person gave Sarjo Bojang money.

After their release from the police station, the accused met Sarjo and they involved in pushing and pulling which resulted into a fight. During the fight, he explained that the accused pulled out a knife and stabbed the complainant at the left hand side of his buttock and on his chest.

According to the prosecutor, both the complainant and accused were arrested and taken to Bakau Police Station where their statements were taken and the complainant was also taken to the Kanifing General Hospital and got treated by Doctor Sowe.

Magistrate Doun Njie asked the accused if he had regret his action and he answered affirmative saying ‘yes’ it was not his will to do that but it is the work of Satan. He said further that he used to be at the complainant’s house, a place he said he normally eat and help him to sell and that the complainant is like a brother to him.

However, complainant replied in negative that all he said is not true saying there is nothing between him and the accused person, and that the accused did what he has done on his own will.

The Magistrate ordered the accused to compensate the complainant with amount of D2,000 in default to serve one month in prison while he was ordered to keep peace at all time.
