Residents of Sareh Omar have recently clashed with Senegalese troops who illegally entered the country through the Jarra border.

It was believed that the Senegalese troops came to the country in pursue of log smugglers, though Gambian troop was quickly deployed to the border in respond to that.

Meanwhile, series of Videos showing Senegalese troops clashing with Gambian civilians that emerged on social media on Wednesday has sparked outrage among members of the public.

Army spokesman Major Lamin K. Sanyang who spoke to The Voice said there was no confrontation between villagers and Senegalese troops. “We know that area is a timber business centre which is important for both The Gambia and Senegal,” he noted

He confirmed to us that “we have immediately sent second infantry battalion team from Pakaliba under the command of Lieutenant Colonel Timothy Sanyang of Farafennni Barracks to go and confirm the situation.”

According to the report received from their dispatched military team at the border village of Sareh Omar after due consultation, he said, “the Senegalese troops was on patrol and eventually lost their way and mistakenly entered The Gambia territory.”

However, according to the circulated videos scuffle erupted between Gambian and Senegalese troops in Darsilami after the latter attempted to enter The Gambia.

It could be recalled that some months ago Senegalese gendarmerie stormed The Gambia to abduct a Gambian man after shot him in the hand.
