Allege Fraudster Charge with 3 counts

One Karanta Darboe, native of Sukuta but resident in Kololi has been charged with three counts, obtaining goods by false pretense, stealing, and possession of counterfeit currencies, and awaiting trial, Lamin Njie, Police spokesperson confirmed.

On Tuesday, Anti-crime Unit of the Gambia Police Force in Bijilo paraded Darboe before the media, where Lamin Njie, Police spokesperson said the accused is been involved 43 fraud cases.

“His methods include obtaining goods from shopkeepers on the pretext that he has foreign currencies and will pay after changing to Dalasi.  Sometimes he takes counterfeit currencies to Bureau de changes and change to Dalasi at various amounts, only for them to realize later that the currencies are fakes,” Njie told journalists.

He further said, in other instances Darboe’s posed as someone just from abroad and doesn’t have Dalasi but foreign currencies such as Dollars, Euro, Swedish Korona, and sometime showed   foreign currencies to the business proprietors only with the intention obtain goods at various amounts and never return to pay.

Njie added  that  in other instances, he even obtain goods from the shop then pretend to collect money from the car but drives away, never to be seen.

According to him, the Police is currently investigating 43 different complaints against him relating to similar scams.

He revealed that investigators recovered from him 8 bags of 50kg rice, 8 bags of 25kg rice, 4 gallons of 20 liters cooking oil, drums of water paint, crates of drinks, and buckets of Armanti Mayonnaise among others.
