The Brikama Magistrates’ Court Tuesday remanded a man at Mile II Central Prison after he failed to meet bail conditions over drug offence charges.

The accused, Midana Isnaba, was arraigned before Magistrate M.S. Dem on a charge of possession of prohibited drugs, contrary to Section 35(2)(a) of the Drug Control (Amendment) Act 2014.

Prosecuting for the Drug Law Enforcement Agency, The Gambia (DLEAG), ASP M.K. Bojang told the court that the accused was found in possession of 5 grams and 694 milligrams of cannabis skunk.

The alleged offence reportedly occurred on 14 December 2025 in Bafuloto, West Coast Region.

When the charge was read and explained to him, the accused pleaded not guilty.

During the proceedings, Isnaba told the court that he was arrested together with three other persons who were later released. He also claimed that he had been granted bail at the police station and had been reporting as required, before being informed that he would be taken to court.

He further alleged in court that he had been sending money to an officer in charge and claimed to have evidence. The court sought clarification on the allegation, with Magistrate Dem asking whether any money had been sent to the bench, which the accused denied.

The prosecution also inquired whether any payment had been made to the prosecutor or any court official, which the accused again denied.

The prosecution applied for an adjournment to allow the calling of witnesses and did not oppose bail.

Magistrate Dem granted the application and adjourned the case to 6 May 2026. Bail was set at D150,000 with two Gambian sureties required to deposit valid identification documents.

However, the accused was unable to meet the bail conditions and was subsequently remanded at Mile II Central Prison pending the next hearing.
