Kardo and Smile Nation Foundation Sign Historic Deal to Champion Street Culture Across Africa

In a landmark move set to reshape the urban arts landscape across the continent, the Kardo Foundation for the Development of Street Culture and Sports has signed a strategic partnership agreement with Smile Nation Foundation, officially appointing the organization to coordinate Kardo’s national festival stages throughout Africa.

The agreement, described by both parties as “historic,” marks a major milestone for The Gambia, which has been named the official headquarters of Kardo Africa and will host the Kardo International Street Culture and Sports Awards. This bold initiative aims to position The Gambia as a continental and global leader in the promotion of street art, urban sports, and youth-driven creative movements.

Under the five-year agreement, Smile Nation Foundation will organize Kardo Festival national stages in countries across Africa, culminating in the Kardo African Finals, which will now be held permanently in The Gambia. The partnership is expected to boost African participation in Kardo’s online and live competitions, while empowering thousands of young artists, athletes, and performers.

“This is a transformative opportunity for The Gambia and Africa at large,” the organizations said in a joint statement. “It goes beyond competitions, it’s about youth empowerment, cultural diplomacy, and unlocking the socio-economic potential of street art and urban sports.”

The partnership also reflects growing recognition of street culture as a powerful force for positive change. With support from The Gambia’s Vice President and plans in motion to engage the Office of the President, Smile Nation Foundation emphasized the importance of government and community collaboration in making this initiative a success.

“We are honored by the trust Kardo has placed in us,” said a representative from Smile Nation Foundation. “This is more than a project, it’s a movement. And we are committed to preserving the vision, values, and cultural impact that Kardo represents.”

Smile Nation also credited the achievement to strong backing from The Gambia’s cultural sector and local stakeholders, whose ongoing support laid the groundwork for this international partnership.

As preparations begin for the first round of Kardo national stages under Smile Nation’s leadership, the collaboration promises to redefine how street culture is celebrated, supported, and scaled across the African continent, offering young creators the global platform they deserve.
