Gambia Struggles With Dermalogists As Skin Problems Soar

By: The Voice Reporter

The Gambia currently has only one dermatologist to cater to the country’s soaring cases of skin complications, The Voice can reveal.

Public health facilities across the country do not offer dermatology services and therefore, all skin complications are referred to the country’s main referral hospital in Banjul.

However, Edward Francis Small Teaching Hospital(EFSTH) is struggling to cope with the sheer number of skin patients as the facility has only one dermatologist.

Patients have to visit the hospital as early as 6 a.m. to collect numbers to enable them see the dermatologist, who starts consultations at 1 p.m. daily.

As the rainy season peaks, so does the number of skin patients who visit the hospital for skin care.

“Currently, there is only one Cuban dermatologist at the EFSTH. He is overworked and overwhelmed by the number of patients, who visit the hospital on a daily basis,” an insider told this medium.

The Voice can authoritatively report that the dermatologist can see not more than 60 patients a day.
