Mayor Bensouda leads hundreds of residents in cleansing exercise

Ahmed Talibd Bensouda, Mayor of Kanifing Municipal Council over the weekend led hundreds of residents to clean the streets of the municipality locally known as ‘set-settal’.

Speaking to reporters at the Bakoteh dumpsite, mayor Bensouda highlighted the developments registered under his leadership for the municipality and announced plans to build a bridge at the dumpsite to determine how much wastes come to be dumped at the site on a daily basis.

“You have seen the level of development in the Bakoteh Dumpsite, 42 million dalasis with BMC and German government and SOS, and also the 8 million dalasis to protect the community. Also, very soon we will have a way bridge in the Bakoteh dumpsite to actually give figures about how much waste is coming to the dumpsite on a daily basis,” he said.

“We will also build ten transfer stations across the municipality. These are going to be warehouses where originally it was an illegal dumpsite. Now we are going to build warehouses where people can take their wastes,” he added.

Meanwhile, Citizens’ Alliance Nene Freda Gomez who graced the cleansing exercise also told reporters: “this is about nation building, it is about taking ownership of you and part of you, of protecting it and building it and growing and nurturing it.”

Momodou MC Cham of Gambia Democratic Congress who was also at the cleansing said called for support for Ahmed Talib Bensouda, adding “I am urging other political supporters, let them not see Talib Bensouda as UDP mayor but as mayor of KMC.”

Meanwhile, Karamo Ceesay, councillor for Talinding South, expressed happiness for the exercise saying “we are happy about how the community turned out. Actually, KMC should do this monthly, because for us at our own level we do cleansing exercises every weekend. We are removing waste and sand and we expect three truckloads of waste from this exercise. We will like every community to do cleansing exercises and those who are involved in dumping waste in the street to stop such
