Government refusal to accept deportation flight ‘politically motivated’

The spokesman for Gambian Refugees in Germany has described the refusal of the Gambia government to accept deportation flight from the European nations as politically motivated.

The government in a statement said it “will not give permit to all flights returning migrants from the EU, as the Germany government is preparing to repatriate number of Gambians from the country.” The Barrow-led administration has recently faced backlash by critics over its refusal to accept deportation flights, who said he is trying to score a political point because election is just few months away.

“When you look at the whole situation of the Gambian refugees or migrants in Germany it has been for 4 years and the Gambian government was helpless and cannot do anything about their situation, whereby no negotiation table with the government of The Gambia and the Germany government has come to a decision over the plight of the Gambian migrants in Germany,” Yaya Sonko said.

“Waiting three months before election, taking such a decision is definitely telling every Gambian that this is politically motivated. Most or the Gambian migrants in Germany are disappointed and hopeless for coming back to their country and even some prefer dead than been repatriated to Gambia. The future of the Gambian youth been stolen by the 22 years of dictatorship and coming into the coalition government led by president Barrow in the last five years couldn’t fulfill the hope for the youth, “he added.

In February 2021, the European Parliament has mentioned that, The Gambia government is failing to comply with its obligations under the international law to take its own nationals back into the country.

According to the Interior Ministry of Baden Wurttemberg region, more than two thousand six hundred Gambians should officially leave this region, which mean this number of Gambians in Germany should be deported back home.

Talks between EU commission and Gambian president Adama Barrow, failed to solve the problem, the statement continued that, according to a reliable list compiled by the German police force, there are currently six thousand five hundred and sixty none Gambians in Germany who are obliged to leave Germany.
