Police arrest five Ghanaians over illegal transportation of fuel

The Gambia police have arrested and detained five Ghanaian men for suspected illegal importation of fuel into the country, which goes against the laws of the land.

The arrested main names are Thomas Abraham – Nationality Ghanaian, age 50, position captain, Moro Ousman- Nationality Ghanaian, age 47, Position Cook, Awal Ali – Nationality Ghanaian, age 21, Position Chief Officer, Adjetey Jonathan, Nationality Ghanaian, age 29, Position Fisherman, David Salifu – Nationality Ghanaian, age 45, Position Mechanic.

“Personnel of the Police Intervention Unit Delta Platoon in collaboration with the GRA Intelligence Unit, intercepted 37 thousand litres of fuel (Diesel), suspected to be illegally imported into the country.

“This came on the heels of a joint operation launched at the Sea Port (Waafi Njago) aimed at tackling illegal importation of goods into the country. Such illicit activities by individuals, is motivated by their desire to evade payment of taxes and fulfillment of other tax obligations,” police said in a statement.

“The vessel intercepted was searched and the following crew members were arrested. Thomas Abraham – Nationality Ghanaian, age 50, position captain, Moro Ousman- Nationality Ghanian, age 47, Position Cook, Awal Ali – Nationality Ghanaian, age 21, Position Chief Officer, Adjetey Jonathan, Nationality Ghanaian, age 29, Position Fisherman, David Salifu – Nationality Ghanaian, age 45, Position Mechanic.

“They are currently helping the police in their investigations. Members of the public are encouraged to volunteer information about criminal activities within their communities. Together we can achieve zero crime,” the statement stated.
