SIC elects Sheikh Essa Foday Darboe new president

Supreme Islamic Council has elected Sheikh Essa Foday Darboe its new president amid controversial with breakaway Rawdatul Majilist – a group claiming to represent the nation’s Muslim council.

In a SIC congress which started on Saturday through Sunday saw Sheikh Darboe polled 89 votes out of the 105 delegates who voted. He replaces Muhammed Lamin Touray.

Speaking to the delegates’ president-elect Sheikh Essa Foday Darboe promised to unify the nation’s Muslims.

“We will do our level best to establish unity as the principal of the Supreme Islamic Council,” Sheikh Essa Foday Darboe said.

He said, despite contesting against three other candidates that doesn’t mean they have difference saying that it was the decision of people nominates.

“The candidates are one body just because we have a different intention that’s why we have three candidates based on the nominations of the people who think those people can run the council, but that doesn’t mean that we are with different views,” he added.

He continued: “Thank God we are one. We have one vision that is to work for the sake of Allah [God] and to unify Muslims in this country.”

Breakaway group Imams – Rawdatul earlier urged the nation’s Muslims to boycott the congress describing its illegitimate. They said they don’t recognize the council’s congress arguing that Muhammed Lamin Touray-led executive over stayed in power.
