Government must act fast in response to Covid-19 crisis… NHRC

National Human Rights Commission has urged the government to ‘act fast in a coordinated and unambiguous manner in response to the Covid-19 cases, as Leadership is critical and crucial.’

The commission said on its Facebook page that “Gambians must obey and abide by the directives issued by the government on July 30th requiring Compulsory Wearing of Face Masks, Temporary Closure of Non-Essential Public Places and Prohibition of Public Gatherings for 90 days. Unfortunately, there is indiscipline in our society with many refusing to obey the directives issued by the Government.”

The Commission stressed that “Law enforcement officials must be supported and allowed to do their work if we are to contain this pandemic. People must respect the orders of the police who have been given the mandate to enforce the law. The Police are however currently under a lot of pressure and are facing capacity issues to enforce the lockdown measures.”

“The general public must obey the government directives and this is non-negotiable. We should all be in it together,” the Commission added.
