‘UDP has no constitutional mandate to recall me as BAC Chairman’

Embattled chairman of Brikama Area Council (BAC) has argued that opposition United Democratic Party (UDP) has“no legal authority to recall him from his chairmanship.” He made it clear that he’s been elected by the people of West Coast Region.

Sheriffo Sonko made this comment days after he was expelled from United Democratic Party (UDP) along with two other ward councillors.

Chairman Sonko in an audio making round on social media thanked God for the opportunity already given to him to serve as the chairman of Brikama Area Council, stressing that as His decisions cannot be challenged by any person.

“I thanked God for the decision He has already made which no person can challenge. So, I thanked Him for bringing me to this level and I will never go against His decisions which are always final. I take my expulsion from the UDP party as something foolish and childish because going back to the constitution I am the elected chairman of the Brikama Area Council by the people of the region,” he said.

He added “So, it is the people of West Coast Region who have the mandate to recall me if they feel I am not serving their purpose. But the United Democratic Party cannot decide for the people of the region.

The people of the region have spoken in April and on the 16th May, 2018 I sworn with the Quran according to the constitution of the Gambia and the Local Government Act which mandated me to support the President who was the same party member with me. So how can I go against that person just for the interest of a single individual?”
