OHCHR, UNDP train journalists on gender-based violence

The Office of Human Commission for Human Right in collaboration with United Nation Development Program has trained journalists on sexual gender-based violence, aimed to equip trainees on effective reporting on gender-based violence.

TRRC’s women affairs coordinator,  Yadicone Njie Eribo said: They are hoping that at the end of the training journalist will be able to report on SGBV cases and they will have their gender lenses when reporting and will be more sensitive towards the victims of SGBV victims and also know the languages use in SGBV reporting. “

She said  TRRC women Affairs is also planning to do media engagement which will be limited to ten media houses but will make sure that it reach all the media houses, adding “SGBV is not only who are  women but men are involve as well therefore I expect after the training when there are cases on SGBV journalist will be more sensitive towards the feelings of the victims.”

Ousman Seckan, a participant described the training as vital saying “as journalist we have a very important rule to play to ensure that cases in SGBV are reported in a way it supposed to be.”

Fabakary .B. Cessay, also a participant  described the training have as significant and a very huge impact on his carrier as a human right journalist and it has improve his knowledge in SGBV.

he said:  “This training also serve as capacity building course for me so that I will be able to use that opportunity to also conduct training with the reporters that are working under me so that they can also be in line regarding the principles surrounding media reporting on SGBV.”

Yvonne Masarakufa, a rep from Human Right said: “the training is to make sure media practitioners play their role in disseminating information and also their role of reporting by making sure that the identity and the safety of the victim is protected, and it will make the journalist to report in the best interest of the survivor.”
