At least 16 people who involved in a land dispute with physical planning have been released on bail, the police said.

On Tuesday a group of youth in Sukuta barred officials of Department of Physical Planning from demolishing some homes in the area. This action showed heavy presence of police who had fired teargas at the group of the angry youth as tension heightened at the scene.

Department of Physical Planning demolished some of the houses with claim that the land is a government reserved area.
Police spokesman Lamin Njie, said: “the youth will be tried under a provisional charge of illegal demolition.”

According to ASP Njie, Police were ordered by a Court to debar the youth from destroying homes on the land and “we must abide by regional right-of-passage laws,” he said.

ASP Njie explained: “this resulted into a tussle between the youths and the police in which the police decided to fire teargas to despatch the angry mobsters.”
