Governor Sanyang Sensitise Chiefs on Covid-19

The Governor of West Coast Region (WCR), Bakary K Sanyang, Friday sensitized chiefs within his region on prevention of COVID-19. The sensitization exercise was held in governor’s office, Brikama.

The sensitization aimed at creating awareness on the deadly Corona-19 pandemic on preventive measures and how best they can also sensitise their people at their various community levels.

Speaking at sensitization exercise, the Deputy Governor of WCR said, covid-19 pandemic is a virus spreading fast across the world which The Gambia is not an exception. He said the government is doing its part to curb the spreading so also is the West Coast Region has to do its part through sensitization.

He therefore encouraged the chiefs to update their alkalos and their people about the emergence pandemic especially on the WHO issued guidelines and preventive measures.

Among other things, he enjoined people to refrain from gathering at different places and also avoid ceremonies that will gather large people, example, funerals, naming, and marriage ceremonies.

“All Alkalos that are close to the border villages should make sure that anyone that enter their villages  should be registered at the health officers, and also urge the general public to take preventive measures seriously”, he said.

Aminata Sillah, Regional Health Promotion and Education Officer of West Coast Region, explained that, The Gambia is not the only country that is suffering from the coronavirus pandemic but the entire world.

She added that the virus has now conquered over 196 countries including The Gambia while over 105 people in senegal are infected already.

She went further that as at Friday, the country cases remains and all are imported cases.

She went further to gave brief explanation on Covid-19, the symptoms and preventive measures that all should follow and observe.

, Said his community need a strong sentization and its the biggest boarder between cassamase and gambia,  noting that the sentization should not only stop in the kombo area because  majority of people in that area didnt still understand some of the preventive measures so this sentization program will be very useful in his community.

Other speakers included Omar Colley, Chief of Fone Bondali, Baboucarr Sanyang, and Chief of Kombo East Faraba among other Chiefs.

Strange as it may sound, while the world battles with the ravaging spread of coronavirus, there are not less than 20 countries on the globe that are yet to record a single case of the disease either as suspected or confirmed. However, it must be said that while these countries have no mention of cases in their borders, the governments have put in place precautionary measures in case of any possible outbreak. Meanwhile, Legit.ng reported that amid coronavirus spread, the Nigerian government had added two more nations to the list of high-risk countries which are banned from entering the country. The two new countries added to the list were Austria and Sweden. The minister of health, Osagie Ehanire, made the announcement at a media briefing on Friday, March 2020, in Abuja. In another post, Legit.ng reported that Nigerians had reacted to the federal government’s restriction of travellers from China, Italy and other high-risk countries. The restriction was put in place following the unending coronavirus pandemic facing the country. The affected countries also include Iran, South Korea, Spain, Japan, France, Germany, USA, Norway, UK, Netherlands and Switzerland. Many Nigerians who reacted to the news on social media supported the restriction move by the federal government.
