Papa Njie has been elected as the leader and secretary general of the People’s Progressive Party on Sunday at the party’s national congress at YMCA in Kanifing following two decades banned by the ex-president Yahya Jammeh.
The congress brought together hundreds of the party supporters across the country in which Papa Njie defeated mayoral candidate for the Kanifing Municipality secured 272 votes leaving his opponent Bakary Bunja Darboe ex-vice president under Dawda Kairaba Jawara with 227 votes.
In his victory speech, Papa Njie commended the founding fathers of the party for their effort they did for the party and the country at large.
He described the congress as the most transparent congress in the country, saying that the country gained its liberty during the PPP era under the leadership of Sir Dawda Kairaba Jawara.
He also commended his opponent Mr. Bunja Darboe for mentoring him in the political arena, noting that his party was educating the masses, while he learnt from the politician like Bunja Darboe.
“I will continue to learn from you [Mr. Darboe]. Because before the election you told me that I want transparent election between us and that had happened,” he said.
Njie told delegates that he came to continue the development of the party’s from where the top brass stop.
However, Bakary Bunja Darboe congratulated the newly elected leader of the party for his victory as he wish him best of lucks in his political career.
“I am satisfied with the election conducted by the Independent Electoral Commission. I accepted the result in good faith,” he added.
Mr. Darboe expressed gratitude to the election committee for their steadfastness in ensuring free fair and transparent election and urged the party supporters to unite and denounce violence.
