As part of their quest to mitigating road accidents through sensitizationin the country, Road Safety and Driving Standards Association has been inaugurated in Brusibi.
Micheal Gravil, chairperson of the association, said: “when we get things right, this organization will be one of the biggest in this country, adding that everybody in this country has an interest on road safety.”
According to him, chances are already there and that effort should be made to visit every single business in this country.”
He further called for more volunteers to the organization, noting that there would be TV and radio program to sensitize people.
Micheal has been in The Gambia for thirty years and he has contributed his quota despite his age, still now he is active and what make to be active, is because of the love he have for this country.
Micheal, who was a police officer and a banker in the in UK, has the knowledge on traffic.
Pateh Baldeh, Secretary General of the association, said the executive came to discus issues on how to take forward and develop what we establish.
He said road accidents has been the major ‘killer’ in the country, adding “every minute there is road accident, and as a result of this, no one is safe either directly or indirectly.”
“So it is a matter of concern and is alarming, so base on this, government cannot do it alone, noting that drivers need to be professionally train before been issue any driving license to drive.
He also caste doubt on how drivers acquire license in the country saying “there are driving schools but actually accidents is on the increase.
He said: “Coming with this association, will complement government efforts in the development of this country.”
He said no organization can function without the resources and we have prepared something both national and international level, and the association is legally registered with the Attorney General Chamber’s.
Hon Ousman Touray, vice chairperson of the association, said this is a concern and we are living with terrible situation here and nobody come with a solution to tackle this problem and coming with this initiative I think is a right move.
