IEC appears before House Committee for approval of its 2015-2016 Reports

The Independent Electoral Commission yesterday appeared before the select committee on Regional Government Lands, Ombudsman and IEC for the approval of its 2015-2016 Reports.

Adding together that up to date, the lawmakers will decide on the reports as to whether it would be approved or not, as proceeding continues.

Speaking on behalf of the committee chairman, Hon Lamin Sanneh said: “the presentation of IEC annual activity report to this august select committee is in fulfilling of section 42 (9) of the Constitution of the Gambia .Thus, it is a requirement of the IEC to honor and present the report now .The report highlight the main activities undertaken by the IEC during the year 2015- 2016.”

Sulayman Njie, IEC Director Management said: “they are here to summit their report for the year ended 31st December, 2016.”

He added that the observation with their recommendation for improvement are based on the review and surveillance with of the procedures ,performance of accounting  personnel procurements payroll, compliance to  the financing agreement and application of  national laws etc.

He then said that: “The purpose of the auditing is to enable us to express our professional opinion on the financial statement presented to us by the auditors .The auditors should not be relied in the lead to unveil all defaults or other irregularities. However, if such exist and discovered in the course of the auditing, they should be disclosed.”

IEC Chairman Alieu Momarr Njai said in accordance with section 42 (9) of the Constitution of the Republic of the Gambia 1997.

He said the Report dilates on the capacity building programmes that some IEC staff underwent during the year 2016.

According to him, this includes the training at the University of the Gambia in various field of faculty, and some infrastructural development was achieved notably by the acquisition of new vehicles.
