The Majority and Minority Leaders of the National Assembly have assured Gambians that parliamentary duties will remain a priority despite increasing political activity ahead of the country’s elections.
The assurance was given on Thursday during a pre-session press briefing at the National Assembly Auditorium, following concerns raised about how lawmakers would balance legislative work with campaign-related commitments during the election period.
Minority Leader Alhagie S. Darboe acknowledged that election seasons place additional demands on legislators but said parliament has historically continued its work without interruption during such periods.
He expressed confidence that members would be able to manage both political engagements and their parliamentary responsibilities while remaining accountable to the electorate.
Majority Leader Billay G. Tunkara also stresses that service in the National Assembly carries significant responsibility entrusted by the Gambian people.

He says although lawmakers face competing demands from parties and constituents during campaign periods, parliamentary business must remain the central focus.
According to him, leadership on both sides of the House will continue to engage caucus members to ensure steady attendance and uninterrupted legislative work.
The remarks came ahead of the National Assembly’s Second Ordinary Session of the 2026 Legislative Year, scheduled to begin on June 8, during which lawmakers are expected to debate key bills and scrutinize government policies.
Both leaders reaffirmed that despite the intensifying political season, parliament’s mandate to serve the public interest will remain paramount.
