Bail to Alleged ‘Jungulars’- GDC PRO

Mahamadou M5 Jallow, Public Relation Officer for The Gambia Democratic Congress (GDC) has advised the government to give a bail to alleged Jungulars who are detained without trial for nearly a year.

Recently, Minister of Justice Abubacarr Tambedou, disclosed that The Gambia Government is not yet ready to proceed with the prosecution of alleged Jungulars,

“We will not deny that these Jungulars have been held for a long time now and they have not been brought to the court since then, which posed a challenge for us in terms of dealing with them”

The Attorney General (AG) added that the accused persons admitted to have committed heinous crimes in the country.

Jallow told The Voice newspaper in an exclusive interview at the Management Development Institute (MDI) on 12, October that detaining the said alleged perpetrators for long time are not genuine. It is a violation against human rights.

But he was quick to add that they should be allowed to go back to their homes while prosecution is in progress by virtue of the law.

For M5 Jallow, all the criminals under the second republic were emanated from the former head of state [Yahya Jammeh] saying; some of the alleged jungulars were ordered by him [Jammeh] to commit the crimes on human rights abuses.

“I did not blame the alleged jungulars because they do not know what they were doing and some of them were under forced condition to do their operations by Jammeh. Now we have eliminated him [Yahya Jammeh]; then we must remember that these people had created havoc by killing our brothers and sisters wrongly.”

“However, Gambians should understand that whatever has happened must be bygone.  Considering the status of the exile Gambians, security agents related to the alleged inhuman activities that happened under the APRC regime are now deprived from their nationality. Those detained are as well deprived from their rights,” he said.

He added that the government should know that the detainees have left their wives and children behind and they want to see their families. “Therefore, the government should grant them bail to see their families while legal measures are  taken against them [alleged human rights violators],” he reiterated.

Hon. Jallow noted that the alleged, criminals should be prosecuted by virtue of the constitution of the country but added that as at now, the government should allow them to go home while the trial is in progress so that anyone found guilty will serve imprisonment as the court ordered and come back to the society as a free person after serving the jail term.
