NEA Sensitizes Police Officers on Chemical Multilateral Agreement

 

The National Environmental Agency (NEA) recently sensitised Police officers in Central River Region on chemical and multilateral agreements uses.

The sensitisation was aimed to raise awareness among the security personnel on multilateral agreement, control chemical and pesticide.

It was also aimed for them to understand the Stockholm convention to help in controlling transportation and usage of chemical.

Omar Bah, a participant and a Country’s registrar for chemical described chemicals as significant determiners for sustainable national development.

“And fine for environmental health as well, adding the uses of chemical in human activities such as health, agriculture, energy production and residential purpose continue to improve the quality of live, “he said.

He added: “There are also accidental releases of the chemical during distributions and using of the substance that could damage the environmental media including the soil, water and air.”

However, the government in partnership with UNEP is implementing this project as part of the implementation of the Stockholm convention on persistent organic pollutant that deal with highly toxic chemical.

There is also basal convention that works on matter regarding cross- borders movement of hazardous waste and documentation those enable officials to authorise the transportation of waste.

“We also have the Rotterdam convention that deals with international trade because before shipment of goods the receiving country most gets the consent that goods are entering the country, if not the goods will not be delivered,” he stated.

Ansumana MS keita CRR deputy governor described the forum as essential to enabling the police officers to have proper understanding on chemical control, adding ‘chemicals are useful for human but they can also be harmful to the society due its nature.’

He urged the participants to disseminate the information gained rightfully and help the security agents to protect the country from the hazardous chemicals so as to safe the public.
