Salieu Jallow, an independent presidential candidate has promised to revive Gambia’s economy, tackle corruption and improve living conditions of citizens if elected in the December 2026 presidential election.
Jallow made the promise during an interview with The Voice Newspaper held on Monday.
“We will fight corruption and make sure that public funds are properly managed. As an independent candidate, our priority is to restore the economic condition and improve the livelihood of the people,” he remarked.
Jallow also raised concerns over the state of the agricultural sector, saying farmers were struggling with the high cost of fertilizer and inadequate support.
He described agriculture as the backbone of the national economy, noting that many Gambians depended on farming to feed their families.
“Without investment in agriculture, the economy will sink. That is the situation we are facing currently,” he said.
He expressed concern over the presence of foreign troops in the country, saying they would leave the country if he was elected. “I will send all foreign forces out of the country and hand over our security to our citizens,” he stated.
The independent candidate also criticized what he described as growing tribal remarks in the country’s politics saying such developments posed a significant challenge to the political system.
He urged politicians to focus on their manifestos and policy proposals which might be capable of addressing the country’s challenges rather than engaging in divisive rhetoric.
“Politicians should sell their agendas to the people, concentrate on their manifestos and discuss issues that can change the country’s status quo,” he remarked.
Jallow further called for national unity, describing The Gambia as a peaceful country and urging citizens not to allow elections to divide them.
He said electoral contests were temporary, while the country and its people would remain beyond the polls.
His pledges come as political parties and candidates prepare for the December 2026 presidential election in which economic recovery, governance, security and national cohesion are expected to feature prominently in the campaign.
