The Gambia Police Force (GPF) has taken custody of uniforms previously worn by private security personnel of the Non-Alliance Movement following concerns that the clothing closely resembled uniforms used by state security officers.
The uniforms were handed over to the Police on Wednesday, September 23, 2026, following discussions between the GPF and the executive of the Non-Alliance Movement.
According to the Police, the issue was raised during earlier engagements with the movement, with concerns that the similarity in uniforms could create confusion between private security personnel and members of the state security services.
Following the discussions, representatives of the Non-Alliance Movement handed the uniforms over to the Police.
The GPF described the handover as a constructive response to the concerns it had raised, saying it would help maintain a clear distinction between private security personnel and state security officers.
The Police also used the development to remind political parties, movements and other organisations that engage private security personnel to ensure that their uniforms and identification marks comply with applicable legal requirements.
The force said adherence to such requirements was important to avoid potential breaches of the law and to ensure that private security personnel can be clearly distinguished from members of the state security services.
The handover followed engagement between the Police and the Movement’s executive, with the GPF welcoming the response as a step towards addressing the uniform concerns.
