The National Disaster Management Agency (NDMA) has so far assessed 109 households in the KanifingMunicipality in relation to rain-induced destructions, The Voice has gathered.

Regional Disaster Coordinator, Mr. Ngaign Jeng, said 80 of the households have received humanitarian assistance from World Food Programme (WFP).

According to official statistics, 1962 households have been affected in KM by last year’s rains.

When asked whether the relatively lower number of affected households in KM this rainy season was an indication that the country may not see a repeat of last year’s devastating floods, Mr. Jeng said: “I am not praying for things to be as bad as last year’s but I cannot also say it will not be as bad.”

Meanwhile, the Gambia government made some flood mitigation interventions in parts of KM and the West Coast Region and according to the Executive Director of NDMA Mr. Sanna Dahaba, the interventions marked a paradigm shift from disaster response to mitigation.
