Man dies from electrocution in Tanji

An old man identified as Jalimadi died after being electrocuted on Tanji Beach on Tuesday, 27th June 2023 at around 2:00 pm and 3:00 pm at Tanji Landing site. 

Speaking to The Voice, Omar Gaye, PRO Artisanal Fisheries Association of the Gambia, said some media houses published the incident without accurate information.

However, he narrated that “Jalimadi is not a young man and not a fisherman, he is an old man who has been working in the sea landing site for more than a decade. He used to be among those that carry the fish from the main boat to the landing side. That was his job but he is not a fisherman.”

According to Gaye, the late Jalimadi died when he was undressing in a room and his hands touched the crochet that was having electricity and he got electrocuted. He added that it was a faulty wire but they don’t know how the owner of the place actually wired the room. 

He added that the man was identified as Jalimadi a residence of Jambajelli he has two wives and children the matter was reported to the police for further investigation, noting since the incident happened, the place has been closed down.

However, Police Public Relations Officer, Binta Njie Jatta, added that the man was 52 years and was electrocuted the wire (cable) is the suspected cause of his death.

She noted that witness statements were obtained from witnesses and a case file was opened for further investigations.
