Yankuba Touray’s Appeal Sets For Judgement

The Gambia Court of Appeal yesterday adjourned the appeal of Yankuba Touray, a former member and minister of Local Government and Lands of the defunct former AFPRC junta government that overthrew the democratic government of the later Sir Dawda Kairaba Jawara regime in July 1994.

He was convicted and sentenced to death by hanging after he was found guilty by a high court judge last year.

Dissatisfied with the decision of the high court after his conviction after standing trial for almost a year, Mr. Touray immediately filed an appeal asking The Gambia Court of Appeal to overturn the decision of the high court.

Mr Touray was alleged to have participated in the alleged murder of Ousman ‘Koro’ Ceesay the first finance minister of the junta government in 1995. Touray however, denied any wrongdoing throughout the entire trial citing constitutional immunity.

Since his conviction last year, he has been languishing at the state central prison at mile ii where he is now appealing against the decision of the high court before The Gambia Court of Appeal for consideration.

After going through the prayers and arguments of both the appellant’s lawyer and the respondent, a panel of judges unanimously deferred the case to December 13th for judgement.
