Edrissa Jammeh wins Sir Dawda Jawara Golf tournament

Edrissa Jammeh was crowned champion of the professional category in the second edition of the Sir Dawda Kairaba Jawara Golf tournament played over the weekend.

The tournament was organized by the Fajara Club in partnership with the Gambia Golf Association (GAA). The tournament was played at the Sir Dawda Jawara-Fajara Club Golf Course.

The winner in the professional category, Edrissa Jammeh was given a cash money of D12, 000; second place Yusupha Conteh received D7, 000; third place finisher, Lamin Jammeh pocketed D4, 000 while Yusupha Tamba given D3, 000 for finishing fourth respectively.

As winners in the Caddis category, Ebou Jarju was given 50kg bag of rice and 5liter cooking oil; second place Fansu Drammeh was also awarded 50kg bag of rice; third place Matarr Bah was given 25kg bag of rice and Abdoulie Samateh was given a bag of goodies for finishing fourth place.

Speaking during the presentation ceremony, Ebrima Jawara, president of The Gambia Golf Association stated that the Sir Dawda Kairaba Jawara Golf tournament which was first organized in 2021, is named under the memory of his late father to show appreciation for everything he has done in golf, sports and as well in the development of the country.

He added that the championship, which was participated by fourty players, also included all the stakeholders in golf sports in the country.

“This was what my father was making sure that it happens. Since he’s the one who started the caddis and pros competition in the country. So we felt it fitting that the caddis shouldn’t be left out.”

The Gambia Golf Association sponsored the prize monies for the pros, caddies and the amateurs as well

Edrissa Jammeh said he is so happy for winning the professional category in the golf championship, adding that he deserved to win the championship and that he feels so much happy about it.

“Winning this championship doesn’t mean that I’m the best. We have eight professional golf players but I am the lucky one to win this tournament.”

According to him, in every tournament, there must be a winner and loser, adding that he’s not the best for winning the tournament, instead he is the luckiest.

Ebou Jarju alias ‘Santos’ expressed delight for winning the caddis category once again, noting that he feel so amazing for winning the championship

“I’ve been winning tournaments all the time but this one is so amazing for my career. This is a step forward towards my games and golf career,” he said.

Representative of the Sports ministry, Abdoulie Bojang of National Sports Council said that the government through his office is very much delighted to be part of such activity.

The ambition of the National Sports Council (NSC), as the sports coordinating body, he said is to see all sports going and developing in the country.

He went on to thank the Gambia Golf Association under the leadership of Ebrima Jawara for doing very well towards the development of the golf sports in the country.
