Over 15 vehicles in police custody for breaking traffic rules

Police have impounded more than 15 commercial vehicles for breaking traffic rules as police operation focus on tackling the menace of increase road accident in the country.

Police operation road safety which came into effect barely three days seeks to help reduce road traffic accidents.

According to the police, since its operation, improvements have been registered on the highways, as drivers are now respecting highway and traffic codes.

“The operation has seen tremendous improvement on the roads, drivers are now sure of seeing police personnel in every two kilometres, therefore the issue of overloading and over speeding are becoming history on our roads.

“Accident prevention squad teams are now dispatched from all hotspots, starting from Kalagi to Pakaliba in LRR, where more than 15 vehicles were impounded for breaking traffic rules and drivers fined whilst others processed,” police said.

“In the CRR, the operation is in high gears and drivers now cooperating with ground rules. URR is no exemption and the NBR, a region that’s working hard, under the regional police commissioner; Ansuman Kinteh has registered great strides in accident reduction in the last one week.

“Police in NBR are doing it in a holistic way and with a joined security taskforce, more than a hundred fog lights were confiscated from motorists in that region and over 25 motorcycles and vehicles are grounded for some being unregistered and others not roadworthy,” it added.

However, Police and Partners visit site for proposed weight bridge to curb vehicle overloading.

The Inspector General of Police, Abdoulie Sanyang yesterday joined officials of the Ministry of environment, Ministry of transport, Afric passage, Transport Union and other stakeholders to a site visit in Kembujeh, where a new weight bridge is expected to be built in order to curb the menace of overloading by vehicles, especially transit trucks carrying goods to neighbouring countries like Mali, Guinea and Senegal.

Meanwhile, the IGP expressed GPF’s readiness to employ all resources in making sure that Gambia roads remain accident free. The IGP further hailed the idea of getting the weigh bridge done, this he said will not only minimise overloading but also protect both the road & road users.
