Scores of Gambian football fans and lovers celebrated the maiden appearance of the nation’s national team, the Scorpions, in AFCON.

The scorpions played Mauritania national team yesterday in their opening match as fans went on social media platforms to post their pictures wearing the national team shirts and the nation’s flag for the much awaiting match between Mauritania and The Gambia (match played at 4pm local time).

When Gambia qualified for the continental championship last year, thousands of Gambians stormed the streets of Banjul and Serrekunda in triumph celebration. The Gambia is in the same group with Africa’s best teams – Mali and Tunisia.

Meanwhile, Marcel Mendy, Executive Director of the Gambia National Sports Council expressed optimism that the Scorpions will have a respectable outing in yesterday encounter against Mauritania, a prediction which comes true as the match ended 1:0 in favour of The Gambia.

Abdoulie Ceesay, the National Assembly member for Old Yundum Constituency who is among the Gambian delegation to Cameroon expressed joy over the match.
