Gambia for 5 Years Describes ‘IEC as incompetence and inconsistency’

Pro-President Adama Barrow Gambia for 5 Years and Peace Building, a civil society movement group created to support the Gambian leader has threatened to protest against what the organisation described as ‘the incompetence and inconsistency of the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC)’.

In a letter addressed to the Inspector General of Police (IGP) Abdoulie Sanyang, dated 26th November, 2021, Gambia for 5 Years stressed it is very concern with the incompetence and inconsistencies of the electoral body, arguing that institutions actions poses threat to the peace and stability of the country ahead of the December 4th, Presidential election.

The letter pointed out that the incompetence and inconsistency of the electoral body nearly led to civil unrest in the country presiding the aftermath of the 2016, Presidential election and the 2018, Local Government elections.

Gambia for 5 Years expressed concerned over the institution losing three court cases concurrently against Gambia Participate, Citizens Alliance (CA) and Gambia Moral Congress (GDC) stressing that it these are clear indications of the incompetence of the IEC.

“Therefore the Gambia for 5 Years and Peace Building wish to hold a Nationwide Peace and Stability March with a view to demonstrating our fear and lack of trust in the IEC’s ability to organize a free and fair election for the 4th December, 2021,” Gambia for 5 Years and Peace Building stated as a reasons for staging the nationwide protest.

They continued to advance that the unprofessional and credibility dwindling of the IEC conclusively remains a concern to the organisation, arguing that the actions of the electoral remain a threat to the peace and stability of the country.

The organizer’s disclosed that the nationwide protest will be staged in all rural regional capitals as well as in West Coast, Kanifing Municipality and Banjul, noting that the planned protest will be staged on the 2nd of December, two days before the much awaited Presidential election.
