Former ruling party APRC and the Gambia Democratic Congress are on talks to form alliance to unseat President Adama Barrow who is seeking a second five-year term in power.

Lawyer Assan Martin who and his team have given their support to Gambia Democratic Congress to lead the country is chairing the talks between the two parties.

Speaking to reporters at a news conference held at YMC: “two major political parties engaged me to chair their negotiation to explore the beginning of a potential alliance, and the talks went well till they reach a stage when they felt that certain issues have to be decided by the leaderships.”

”Let me emphatically say that APRC and GDC are still open to talks and to seal a deal depends on the meeting of their leaderships. Political parties can re-engage at any time soon especially in the coming weeks. Despite the difficult political situation and the emergence of several new parties, myself and two other concern Gambians invited some political parties to discuss the strategic need of coming together where most of the party representatives at the meeting subscribed to the idea of working to form an alliance leading to a National Unity Government. Almost all the parties present agreed to the needs of joining forces and resources to help effect change in December 4, 2021,” he explained.

He said that their subsequent meetings that took place earlier this year 4th July, some political parties raised the issue that they need time to consult their party bases to decide the kind of alliance proposed.

He reiterated that till today some political parties are still engage in consultation with their partners, in trying to form an incredible alliance, but again he said time is essence.

He therefore urged the public to exercise patience for a compromising initiative, adding “now that the talk of an alliance is at a party level I and my team have a careful review situation and we assessed the political statistics in the past election to give guide to make the decision to join forces with the GDC to support their manifesto.”
