Gambia qualifies for AFCON 2022

The Gambia national football team, Scorpions has qualified for the Africa Cup of Nations due in Cameroon in 2022 for the first time ever after a 1-0 win over Palancas Negras of Angola in Banjul on Thursday, 25th March, 2021

The team’s lucky shined as the striker Assan Torrest Ceesay hit the ball into the net of the opponent at the 62nd minutes of play. It is a spectacular goal of the match!

Scorpions now secured 10 points in their group, as both Gambia and Gabon are expected to take part in 2022 Africa Cup of nations in Cameroon.

Thousands of jubilant, Gambians and non-Gambian fans flocked into the streets to celebrate the victory recorded in the country’s football history for the first time.

Meanwhile, President Adama Barrow, who is on holiday at his hometown in Mankamang Kunda, described the well contested match “a victory for The Gambia as a whole” adding “my government will continue to support the Scorpions and football in general because they have made everybody proud.”

“I urge them to put in more efforts and carry the AFCON victory home. They’re up to the task! I am their biggest supporter! This is great and this is big in history of Gambia”, and “I am really excited, very happy, everybody is happy and I will take this opportunity to thank the boys and the coach and everybody,” he said.

He called for unity among Gambians to achieve more development for the country saying he is happy that football is “free of politics.”
