‘Covid-19 Campaign’ in Belgium generates fund for sponsored Gambian student families

Belgian Friends of The Gambia (BFoTG), a humanitarian organization based in Belgium Saturday distributed food and non-food items to 140 student families under their sponsorship list in the country.

The donated food items serve as a relief package amid of the Covid-19 pandemic.

In a WhatsApp message from the chairman of the BFoTG, Mr. Patrick de Vos indicated that the food and non-food items BFoTG start giving out to the family members of their sponsored Gambian students in the country came from the goodwill gesture of the Belgium nationals.

He explained that his organization launched a campaign in Belgium called: “Covid-19 Campaign 4 BFoTG Sponsored Students in T he Gambia with aim of gathering funds for their sponsored students’ families in The Gambia.

“Any amount of money we generated from the campaign here in Belgium will be used to buy food and important items for the families of our sponsoring students in The Gambia to better them during this trying time of Covid-19,” Mr.Vos explained.

He disclosed that the pandemic is disturbing lives of human-race globally, while he promised that his organization will continue to raise more funds for the family members of their sponsored students.

The distribution of the items commenced in the school, Nyodema Nursery School in Manjai Kunda. Parents were divided into different groups to avoid large gathering but observed social distancing as part of guideline to avoid the spread and contacting of the pandemic.

The handing over of the items was presided over by Madam Mariama Darboe, Headmistress of Nyodema Nursery School.

The items included thirty-three bags of rice, Nine bags of onion, eight bags of potatoes, thirty-three packets of bar soap, thirty-three 4 litres cooking oil and nine bags of sugar.

Madam Darboe informed the parents “These food and sanitary items cost D90, 000 and it was sponsored by our Belgian Friends, BFoTG.”

She expressed her appreciation over the gesture saying “both present and past assistance from the sponsored are always recognized by my school and the community of Manjai Kunda.” She added that the organization started sponsoring her school children since 2002 non-stop.

However, families of Thirty-three sponsored students in the school received the food package relief while another families will received similar items this week.

In similar vein, Buba Jammeh, headmaster of Jambanjelly Nursery School, West Coast Region also distributed similar items to families of students sponsored by the BFoTG while similar presentation was done also at Siffoe Lower School, another school sponsored by BFoTG.
