GBOS Asked To Reappear Before House Committee

The National Assembly Public Enterprise Committee on Monday asked officials of Gambia Bureau of Statistic to reappear for proper scrutiny as the institution failed to present the final statement for year 2017 and 2018 for review and consideration.

Halifa Sallah, the Chairperson of the Committee said “it is a constitutional requirement that the National Assembly establish a committee to monitor the operations of Public Enterprises to ensure that all there under takings adheres with the principles of patriotic transparency and truth, to carry out the mandate and that the National Assembly is given the responsibility to receive the activity report and financial statement from each public enterprises to act.”

He said the specific instruction is that, at the end of the financial year from each enterprise, activity report and financial statement will be submitted to the committee of enterprise.

“We have the agreement waiting for each enterprise to represent, report and the initial contract was that, all the public enterprises should submit their 2015 and 2016 activity report and financial statement before 30th June 2018,” he said.

Meanwhile, Baboucarr Sarr, chairman of GBOS said it is unfortunate that agreement couldn’t be implemented as planned. He disclosed that at GBoS level they faced challenges as most of the funds spend by the organization comes from the donors that require different reporting systems.

He added that “the funds we were getting from government is basically use to pay salaries and other operating expenses.”
