Veterinarians Trained on Foot and Mouth Disease

Dozens of veterinarians have completed a three days training on curing animal foot and mouth disease, held at Mansea Beach Hotel under the organisation the department of livestock services.

The training also aimed to bring all the key players that are dealing with the farmers directly to have refreshers discuss with some of the burning issues affecting them on their daily works.

Dr. Abdou Ceesay director general of livestock services who spoke at the closing ceremony said the training came as a result of the outbreak of the disease in 2018.

He said the objective is to train veterinary field staff on Foot and mouth disease detection, in general surveillance, and diagnostic and reporting.

He described the training “as a very important one ,as at the end of this training , we are hopeful that our veterinary personnel who are the trainees in this forum would be able to gain sufficient knowledge  regarding the recognition  of Foot and mouth disease  and be able to impact that knowledge  and filter the knowledge’s to the other field staff who are unfortunate to attend as well as the farmers who are very important when it comes to disease control in our livestock  particularly foot and mouth disease .”

He used the opportunity to thank the regional livestock directors who are the main supervisor of the field staff for their commitment in participating in this training. He said the training will also look at different diagnostic techniques that are available for detection of foot and mouth disease using the laboratory. He cited that among the participants are their veterinary lab technicians, and two senior staff of the DLS, who are part of the resource’s person.

He assured the continuation of capacity building of his staff, saying that considering the veterinary field we are supposed to have constant refreshers training.
