Unique Foundation commemorates International Day of Education

Unique foundation with support from the US Embassy over the weekend commemorated the International Day of Education 2020 at the Learning and Resource centre office. Theme; “Learning Empowering people”

Solomon head of Unique Foundation said: “this is a Charity that work with women, children and youth.”

He added: “ this operating since 2014 , and since that the foundation has been doing a lot of activities , especially in the area of advocacy ,related to issues of education, as education is the key and this project started in 2017 and the reason been that we notice that a lot of number of students children have less academic performance in school, and most of them lack adequate planning materials , as well as qualify tutors to help them find out ,their school work.”

According to him, the centre wants to help the low learners in school, who are not fast learners with their academic work, adding the ultimate goal is to prevent the drop out students in school, adding the project is supported by the American Embassy in implementing such activities.

“We are looking forward in expanding this centre to other regions in the Gambia,” he said, and cited that they are using the celebration to advocate for the needy people to go into learning through education.

He said the goal is not only to learning resource centre but a library, whereby students can come and make research and learn more skills saying “we are working hard to teach students how to use computers application.”

Malleh Sabally a senior Educationist at MOBSE said the opportunities that comes with the fourth Industrial revolution are lower barriers between inventors and markets more active roles for the artificial intelligence, integration of different techniques and domains and improve the quality of our life’s at home, work, and many other places.

He added that it can also improve the quality of existing jobs, and give people more time to focus on what they want to do, adding “therefore empowering people through learning, means moving them from enforced powerlessness to a position of power and this can only be done through access to education.”

“Education empowers people with the knowledge, skills and values they need, to build a better world and the belief that quality education can help reduce poverty and inequality comes from a recognition that, it is a basic human right, similar to food and shelter.

In our society education has traditionally been the most accessible path to greater opportunity historically, the accumulation of skills, based on a foundation of literacy and numeracy, provided a clear route to a stable career and the betterment of one life,’ he said.

He said: “learning Innovation is an initiative to explore the close links between how we gain knowledge and how we apply it citing that significance of learning and by empowering people you enable them to achieve goals through their own ideas an efforts and that one of the reasons for the incredible success of public education in the United States.”
