Mai Fatty urges Barrow government to review decision on closure of radio stations

Leader for Gambia Moral Congress has advised the Barrow government to review their position on shutting down of radio stations without delay.

The government shutdown two privately-owned radio stations and arrested four journalists amid Sunday protest that turned violent when Thousands of Gambians under Operation Three Years Jotna took to the streets on Sunday to call on President Adama Barrow to step down but the protest however turned violent.  At least 140 people were arrested during and after the clashes including top brass Three Years Jotna whose case is pending at the high court in Banjul after Kanifing magistrates’ court announced it has no jurisdiction to hear the case.

But speaking to journalists at a news conference at his party bureau on Kairaba Avenue on Thursday, Mai Ahmed Fatty said: “regarding the closure of radio stations, I urged the government to review the decision without delay.”

According to him, this is necessary not only because many Gambians believe due process was not followed, and government itself could be in breach of the law.

Mr Fatty said: “I call on The Gambia government to withdraw the case against Gambian currently standing trial for the alleged disturbances of last Sunday the 26th January 2020.”

He urged “government should do better than responding violence with violence. Alleged breach of the law must not provoke executive excesses.”
