YJAG trains young journalists on migration reporting

Young Journalist Association over the weekend trained dozens of young journalists on migration reporting that aimed to equip young journalists on how to better report on migration.

Speaking at the training, Kebba Jeffang, president of YJAG said his association’s objective is complementing the role of Gambia Press Union.

“We have a responsibility as an association and this responsibility defers, it includes a lot, to capacitate our members, also spacing and molding aspiring journalist,” he added.

“This topic is not chosen by accident, it is chosen based on what we are experiencing in the ground as journalist,” he added.

According to him, migration is a trending issue in the world, noting YJAG is concern because it involves young folks of this country.

He stated that many of our brothers and sisters are currently living in different part of the world.

“Majority are in Europe with paperless, some of them fear deportation, this are all problems they faced”, he said

He explained that, in the Gambia only few media houses report on migration, adding that many times some take context from western media.

He further advices young journalist to be reporting on migration positively base on right and factual information.

Muhammed S Bah, Vice President of YJAG, in his presentation on the contribution of migration to Gambia’s Economic, said more than 90,000 Gambians are in the Diaspora and half of them are contributing to the economics of the country.

He said migration is the movement of person or groups of person either across an international border.

Demba Kanteh from MAJAC, gave a presentation on fact checking ethical consideration in migration reporting.
