Gambia’s Police arrest, charge 15 protesters calling on President Barrow to respect three-year

Gambian Police spokesperson, ASP Lamin Njie, confirmed on Friday the arrest of 15 protesters who assembled at Senegambia.

Reports say the demonstrators are calling on President Adama Barrow to respect the three-year transition period he agreed with his coalition partners and step down.

“They are 15 in number, 8 females and 7 males, subsequently charged with Prohibition of conduct conducive to the breach of the peace contrary to section 9 of the public order act, laws of the Gambia.

“They never applied for a permit from the Police yet today they assembled at Senegambia for a demonstration. The Police Tourists Security Unit (TSU) personnel tried to disperse them peacefully but they never adhered to that.

“They were eventually arrested and taken to Kairaba Police Station and their statements taken,” he said.

“They are currently granted bail and will be arraigned before the court soon,” he added.

Sources told said that the protesters were heading to a meeting venue where members of the Gambian political parties, civil society group and one independent candidate that backed President Barrow candidature in the December 2016 presidential were meeting.

They were chanting calling on President Barrow to respect the three-year transition period he agreed with his coalition partners, sources added.
