The Gambia has been confirmed as Non-Permanent Co-Chair of the Global Alliance for the Missing (GAM), taking up the position alongside Switzerland for a two-year term beginning October 1st, 2026.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs, International Cooperation and Gambians Abroad announced the development in a statement issued in Banjul on Wednesday, describing the appointment as recognition of The Gambia’s continued engagement in migration governance and diaspora affairs.
The Global Alliance for the Missing brings together states, international organisations and civil society partners to strengthen international cooperation in addressing cases of missing persons, including migrants who go missing along migration routes.
The alliance also works to support families and communities affected by cases of missing persons.
According to the Ministry, The Gambia’s appointment reflects its longstanding commitment to the protection of vulnerable migrants and efforts to strengthen international cooperation in dealing with missing persons.
The Ministry said the Government appreciates the confidence placed in The Gambia by the Global Alliance for the Missing and its Secretariat, which is hosted by the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC).
In assuming the responsibility, the government has committed to working with Switzerland, the ICRC and other members of the alliance throughout the two-year term.
The government said The Gambia will seek to contribute to the objectives of the alliance, with particular focus on greater cooperation, solidarity and practical action in addressing the humanitarian consequences of people going missing and supporting affected families.
The co-chairmanship takes effect on October 1, 2026 and will run for two years.
