His Lordship Edrissa M.O. Faal was on Friday sworn in as the new Chief Justice of The Gambia, pledging to uphold the independence of the judiciary and ensure the timely delivery of justice.
President Adama Barrow administered the oath of office at a ceremony in Banjul, describing the appointment as part of the government’s ongoing efforts to strengthen the justice system and uphold the rule of law.
In his inaugural remarks, Chief Justice Faal thanked President Barrow for the confidence reposed in him and pledged to discharge his constitutional responsibilities with diligence, integrity and impartiality.
He said he would work to safeguard the independence of the judiciary while consolidating the gains made under his predecessor, Chief Justice Hassan B. Jallow.
President Barrow commended Chief Justice Faal for his distinguished career in advancing the rule of law both in The Gambia and internationally.
He also highlighted the new Chief Justice’s expertise in international arbitration, noting that his legal experience has contributed significantly to the country’s interests over the years.
The President reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to an independent judiciary, assuring Gambians that the government would continue to provide the necessary support for the courts to effectively discharge their constitutional mandate.
“We are resolved to resource them, to legislate in their favour, and to respect their absolute independence,” President Barrow remarked.
The President also paid tribute to the outgoing Chief Justice, Hassan B. Jallow, praising his contribution to judicial reforms and the strengthening of the justice sector during his tenure.
He says Justice Jallow leaves behind a stronger judicial foundation that will support the continued development of the country’s justice system.
Chief Justice Faal’s swearing-in marks the beginning of a new chapter for the Gambian judiciary amid expectations of continued reforms aimed at enhancing public confidence in the administration of justice and reinforcing the rule of law.
