The Gambia Amputee Football Association (GAFA) has begun training the country’s first women’s amputee football team, opening new opportunities for women with limb loss to participate in competitive sport.
The initiative represents a significant development for women’s football and disability sport in The Gambia, providing women with limb loss an opportunity to develop their football skills and pursue competitive football.
The newly formed team is currently undergoing training, with players learning the fundamentals of amputee football while improving their technical abilities and gaining experience.
GAFA said the initiative is also aimed at promoting greater inclusion and participation of women with disabilities in sport.
The training programme provides the players with an opportunity to build confidence, develop their abilities and prepare for future competitions.
The establishment of the women’s team also seeks to challenge perceptions about disability and demonstrate that physical disabilities should not prevent people from participating in sport.
For the players, regular training sessions provide an opportunity to develop their skills and compete in a sport they enjoy.
Under the message, “Disability is not inability,” GAFA is promoting greater participation of women with disabilities in football and creating a platform where their sporting abilities can be recognised.
The association hopes the initiative will encourage more girls and women with disabilities across The Gambia to take part in sport and pursue opportunities in football.
