The Kanifing Magistrates’ Court has remanded Amadou Jeng at Mile II Central Prison after he pleaded “not guilty” to a charge of assault causing actual bodily harm.
The case was heard before Magistrate F.J. Camara yesterday, with ASP Ahmed Touray appearing for the Inspector General of Police (IGP). Jeng was not represented by a lawyer.
Jeng is charged with assault causing actual bodily harm, contrary to Section 196 of the Criminal Offences Act 2025, Laws of The Gambia.
According to the particulars of the charge, he allegedly assaulted Nyima Jassey on her left hand on 6 October 2026 at Bakoteh, in the Kanifing Municipality.
When the charge was read and interpreted to him in a language he understood, Jeng denied the allegation. He also complained that police officers had not given him an opportunity to explain what transpired between him and the complainant.
Presenting the facts of the case, the prosecution told the court that the incident occurred while Jassey was on her way to work.
The prosecution alleged that Jeng was standing by the highway, insulting people, before telling Jassey that his remarks were directed at her.
According to the prosecution, Jeng then rushed towards her, prompting her to run into a shop for safety. Before she could lock the door, he allegedly struck her hand with a stick.
The prosecution further told the court that people in the area intervened to rescue Jassey. A police officer identified as Sergeant Camara subsequently arrested Jeng and took him to the police station.
Jassey was also taken to the police station before being referred to Sukuta Health Centre for treatment. After receiving treatment and being discharged, she returned to the police station and gave a statement.
The prosecution told the court that a medical certificate issued to the complainant was tendered in evidence. Jeng did not object to its admission.
However, he denied the prosecution’s account of the incident.
The prosecution subsequently applied for an adjournment to secure the attendance of the first prosecution witness (PW1) at the next hearing.
The court adjourned the case to 17th November 2026 at 11:30 a.m. for the testimony of PW1 and ordered that Jeng remained in custody at Mile II Central Prison.
