Almameh Gibba, the National Assembly Member (NAM) for Foñi Kansala, has sharply criticized the Truth Reconciliation and Reparations Commission (TRRC), alleging that it was politicized against former President Yahya Jammeh.
He argued that the TRRC was more of a witch hunt against Jammeh than anything else. Responding to questions from journalists at the launching ceremony of the No-To-Alliance-Movement (NAM) over allegations of torture, killing, and other inhumane treatment meted to citizens under the former regime, NAM Gibba argued that the commission was a political instrument designed to trumpet unfounded allegations against the former President Jammeh.
The second deputy leader and spokesperson of the five Foni National Assembly Members also accused President Adama Barrow and the Lead Counsel of the Commission, describing the TRRC as a political platform.
“Therefore, as a movement, we are not in marriage with the TRRC which was politicized. Others were more hurt than the people who claimed to be killed, slaughtered, and wounded. Attackers and sponsors of heinous crimes were brought to the TRRC to be smiling with the Lead Counsel,” the Foñi Kansala NAM alleged.
Furthermore, he alleged that the employment status quo of the TRRC that had left them doubtful without mentioning name, was that a coupist who was a soldier in the US, could join, and be selected as the Chief Investigator.
“This is where we get the TRRC all wrong, and we will correct it with the right institutions, we will correct it with the right tools, and we will correct it with the right laws,” he stressed.
He added that when they regained power, the movement would make sure it revisited what was done and constitute a fresh consultation and coordination to build a force for affected people and spearhead a proper form of reconciliation with perpetrators.
The second deputy leader of the movement went on to stress that they were recognized, nor even informed that this was what was done in the past, outlining that it was the APRC Regime that was mentioned, not the No-To-Alliance-Movement.
