The Gambian Government has sealed a deal with the Eni Gambia Ltd aimed at boosting offshore petroleum exploration and attracting investment into the energy sector.
The Ministry of Petroleum, Energy and Mines signed a Petroleum Exploration, Development and Production Licence Agreement (PEPLA) with Eni Gambia Ltd for Offshore Block A1.
According to a statement issued on June 5, 2026, the agreement was signed between the Government of The Gambia, through the Ministry of Petroleum, Energy and Mines, and Eni Gambia Ltd, a subsidiary of Eni S.p.A..
The Ministry said the deal followed a multi-year engagement process coordinated by the Petroleum Commission of The Gambia, including data room visits, pre-qualification under a Request for Information process, and technical and commercial negotiations.
The agreement establishes the legal and commercial framework for the exploration and potential development of hydrocarbon resources in Offshore Block A1.
Block A1 covers approximately 1,300 square kilometres in the deep-water Atlantic Margin off The Gambia’s coast, with water depths reaching up to 3,300 metres. Geological studies indicate exploration potential in the area, although commercially viable reserves have yet to be confirmed.
Under the agreement, the Government of The Gambia will hold a 10 percent equity interest in Block A1 through the Gambia National Petroleum Corporation, with the stake carried during the exploration phase.
Petroleum, Energy and Mines Minister Nani Juwara described the signing as a significant milestone, saying it reflects investor confidence in the country’s resource potential and commitment to responsible exploration.
The Director General and Commissioner of Petroleum at the Petroleum Commission, Engr. Cany Jobe, said the agreement resulted from an evidence-based licensing process and confirmed continued regulatory oversight as exploration begins.
The Ministry added that all exploration activities will be carried out in line with the Petroleum Exploration, Development and Production Licence Agreement (PEPLA).
