Amadou Jaiteh, an opposition leader has called on Gambians to remain vigilant and desist from malpractices during the ongoing supplementary voter registration process.

Mr. Jaiteh, the leader of Peoples Reformist Organization for Growth, Renewal, Equity, Security and Social Justice (PROGRESS) made allegation of irregularities in the ongoing registration exercise.

In an exclusive interview with The Voice on Wednesday, Mr. Jaiteh said he observed what he described as “dubious practices” in parts of the country, and urged Gambians not to neglect their responsibility in safeguarding the integrity of the electoral process.

He alleged that some politicians were engaging in activities aimed at advancing partisan or personal interests.

“Some unscrupulous individuals and dubious politicians are moving around causing havoc, bringing people who are not Gambians to register them, and also registering children just to be able to get ahead,” he alleged. He urged citizens to remain alert and verify the legitimacy of the process.

“Be cautious. Do not allow your intelligence to be insulted by these people,” he added.

Mr. Jaiteh also accused members of the National People’s Party (NPP) of engaging in what he described as “dirty politics,” alleging that some party figures have been involved in such practices since 2016.

Mr. Jaiteh further called on citizens to remain “vigilant, alert and smart” in order to strengthen democratic governance.

He adds that PROGRESS advocates for reducing party politics in the National Assembly and local governance structures, arguing that excessive partisanship undermines good governance and creates a poor political environment.
