Switzerland Backs Morocco’s Autonomy Plan as Credible Solution to Sahara Dispute

Switzerland has reaffirmed its support for Morocco’s autonomy initiative as a basis for resolving the dispute over the Sahara, according to an official statement issued Friday.

The Moroccan Ministry of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation and Moroccan Expatriates said Switzerland considers the initiative proposed by Morocco as “the most serious, credible and pragmatic basis” for settling the regional dispute.

This position was expressed in a joint communication signed by Swiss Federal Councillor and Vice-President, Ignazio Cassis, and Morocco’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Nasser Bourita, during the latter’s working visit to Bern.

The joint document also indicates that Switzerland welcomes the adoption of United Nations Security Council Resolution 2797, noting that “genuine autonomy under Moroccan sovereignty could constitute a feasible solution” to the dispute.

Switzerland further reiterated its support for the central role of the United Nations and the efforts of the Secretary-General’s Personal Envoy aimed at advancing the political process.

The Moroccan ministry said this position reflects growing international backing for the autonomy initiative proposed by Morocco as part of efforts to reach a lasting political solution to the Sahara issue.
